ORFEUS, the European organization for coordinating and promoting broadband seismology in Europe, is looking for a Software developer.
He/she will be working within the ORFEUS data management team at KNMI in The Netherlands, specifically within recently started EC-infrastructure projects like NERA, VERCE and EPOS. The position is temporary for the duration of three years.
You will provide your active contribution, within the ORFEUS Data Center (ODC), in integrating and extending the existing European Infrastructure for Data Services and Tools with processing, analysis and visualisation capabilities for seismological data. You will give specific attention to research products obtained by the execution of distributed workflows. This involves participating to the design and development of:
- the User Interfaces (Scientific Gateways) that will provide a user friendly implementation of the project`s use cases;
- the core workflows and web services that will be deployed within the distributed infrastructure.
The developments will be carried on in close cooperation with international partners, in particular the School of Informatics at the Edinburgh University.
Qualifications
An academic degree in Computer Science and related subjects or relevant experience and good programming skills. A keen interest into Earth Sciences is considered a plus. Experience with web development, technologies, formats (CSS,HTML,XML,RDF) and design user interfaces is required. You should have good knowledge of Linux/Unix, Java (JEE), Python, JavaScript, (My)SQL. Knowledge of widely used opensource frameworks (SPRING, HIBERNATE, ...) is preferable. You will be working within a combined local KNMI and international team. Therefore, we require excellent communication and cooperation skills together with a good knowledge of the English language.
We offer a dynamic, small multidisciplinary group of enthusiastic and highly motivated colleagues. You will be involved in innovative EC-infrastructure projects developing the next generation data services for research in geo- and related sciences. For this we cooperate intensively with many international partners within and outside Europe and, therefore, your work may involve traveling. Within KNMI you will be cooperating within the infrastructure group representing multidisciplinary data services. We offer excellent opportunities to develop own initiatives and attend relevant additional training.
Salary will be in the range of EUR 2513–4380 for a full-time position. Vacation and end-of-the-year gratifications are not included in these amounts. The scaling will depend on the experience and background of the applicant.
General information
The ORFEUS staff is hosted by the seismology department of KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute). The ORFEUS mission and activities can be found on www.orfeus-eu.org. KNMI conducts applied and theoretical research on the basis of seismological and other geophysical observations, like infrasound, and provides information to the general public on earthquakes and related phenomena.
